My brother mentioned on an earlier post that we got to do some wood prospecitng over the Christmas holiday.
We picked up a really pretty Bocote plank that would make a fine instrument if resawed carefully. More carefully than I can do! The plank is 63/64's thick, and we need 4 slices. Rick supposedly has a fine horizontal resaw that could probably get 8 slices if pressed, but should do 4 w/ no trouble.
Have found that contacting Rick is not easy.
Any clues?

Steve, you might be best catching Rick after the NAMM show (Jan 19-22). I'm sure he has his hands full right now getting ready.

I'm no math whiz, but 8 saw slices @.100 (off the saw) is.800 and 7 kerfs @ .062 is .434 for a total thickness of 1.234" if cut perfect.

Larry, the 4 cuts Steve mentions requires no miracle. Math just doesn't lie does it? Not sure Rick could pull that one off.

You are right, and I should have put a smiley face on the comment. It was a facetious remark. (As far too many of mine are.... ) But it was also a nod to Rick's prowess, and his machine's accuracy.

No experience with him, but I've heard good things about his work. Can't remember who I heard it from though. Guess I'm not much help.

A woodslicer blade, kerf of .032 should get you six slices comfortably from that wood, at roughly .125 if you sand lightly between cuts.

A few years back I sent BRW to each of the two folks mentioned in this thread. I sent some Satinwood along with the BRW to one. I was way behind and was looking for some catch-up help.

Last year I had eye surgery with one of the top eye surgeons on the planet. After the surgery, he apologized for "cutting a little to deep" and it would be six months before my vision should clear up. Just one of "those" days everyone has.

It took 18 months to get the BRW back from one of the folks and I measured one piece .110 to .140 in thickness. That's ONE slice mind you with corresponding sizes on the booked piece.

The other BRW was cut excellent by the other person, but he didn't check the saw set-up before starting the satinwood and cut the first piece way to thin to be usable. Granted, he called me immediately and was very upset with himself, but I was still out a $175.00 set of rare wood. I have never farmed out wood to save time again. Not meaning any dissrespect here but we all have "one of those days" I guess. Either person should do a fine job for you.

This story reminds me of a farmer. He said the best fertilizer he ever put on his ground was his shadow. Meaning, he was out there taking care of all the details.

It also reminds me of another story. My grandma was hoeing her garden. A neighbor stops and peers over the garden fence. Clydie, "How in the world to you keep all the weeds out of your garden?" Grandma answers dryly, "I guess it's all the sweat running down the hoe handle that kills 'em."
